Things To Do + Places to Visit in Vietnam

Hanoi

Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital in the north and a great starting point for exploring Northern Vietnam sites like Sapa, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, and the Ha Giang Loop. It’s known for its historic Old Quarter, local food, Train Street, and busy street life, with a more traditional vibe compared to other major cities in Vietnam.

My experience

If I had to choose just one between Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, I’d definitely pick Hanoi for its old-world charm. The Old Quarter is the main tourist area and has this almost Wild West vibe. For hassle-free rides in Hanoi and other major cities in Vietnam, use the Grab app. But the best way to explore is by walking since most tourist spots are close to each other, making it easy to explore on your own. There’s always something interesting to see around every corner!

Hanoi food is definitely a must-try! Don’t miss bΓΊn chαΊ£ and egg coffee, both originating in Hanoi, plus the Michelin-rated Phở 10. For coffee or tea, try Cα»™ng CΓ  PhΓͺ for a view of the cathedral. My favorite spots is theΒ Hoan Kiem Lake area, especially early in the morning and again at night when the red bridge lights up.

1–2 days is enough for the main Old Quarter sights, but if you want to add day trips to Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay, I’d recommend 3–5 days.

Reco hotel neighborhoods: Hoan Kiem District, Old Quarter.

pro-tip: Search “Hanoi” on the Agoda or Klook app. Tap on “Filters” and select my reco neighborhoods.

Where I stayed:
La Madera Hotel & Spa
Ha Noi Lake View Hotel & Travel

Sapa

Sapa is a mountain town in Northern Vietnam, about a 6-hour trip from Hanoi, and you’ve probably seen it on social media for Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, rice terraces and mountain villages, and aesthetic cafΓ©s with a view of the iconic red train.

My experience

What made the long journey worth it for me was Fansipan Peak and the cable car experience, Sapa’s European vibe, aesthetic cafΓ©s with mountain views, and trying local Hmong food. 4D3N was just enough time to tick off the major things on our travel list. We spent one full day for Fansipan + Cat Cat village. Plus, another full day for a countryside tour of Ta Van/Lao Chai village, and the Glass Bridge.

Reco hotel neighborhoods: Sa Pa City Center

Quiet Sapa Hotel

pro-tip: For better chances of clear skies at Fansipan Peak, visit form March–May or September–November.

Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is around 2 hours away from Hanoi and is often called β€œHa Long Bay on land.” It’s home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with towering limestone mountains, winding rivers, and caves that you can explore by boat.

My experience

I absolutely loved the Trang An boat ride, and honestly, this alone is worth the day trip from Hanoi. Cruising through dark caves and suddenly emerging to views of towering cliffs was one of my favorite experiences in Vietnam. Hang Mua, Tam Coc, Bich Dong, the lotus ponds, and Hoa Lu Ancient Capital are also worth adding to a Ninh Binh day tour. If you’re really into nature and scenic landscapes, I’d recommend spending 2 days here and adding Bai Dinh Pagoda, the largest Buddhist complex in Vietnam.

Ninh Binh Private Car
